The festival originated in Puri in the State of Orissa. Rath Yatra or chariot festival is celebrated by Hindus on the second day of Sukla Paksha in the month of Ashadh. The festival commemorate Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to Gundicha mata’s temple.

Three richly decorated chariots, resembling temple structures, are pulled through the streets of Puri called Badadanda.
