Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra Festival at Puri


The festival originated in Puri in the State of Orissa. Rath Yatra or chariot festival is celebrated by Hindus on the second day of Sukla Paksha in the month of Ashadh. The festival commemorate Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to Gundicha mata’s temple.

Three richly decorated chariots, resembling temple structures, are pulled through the streets of Puri called Badadanda. This commemorates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and their sister Subhadra to their aunt’s temple, the Gundicha Temple which is situated at a distance of 2 km from their temple.   1. Nice blog Santosh, I enjoyed reading about it. I have been to Odisha a couple of times and it has always been a memorable experience. During our Odisha visit, we got an opportunity to see Rath Yatra and It was a beautiful experience.
